SME Industrial Training Suite
Module 1: Know Your Legislation
Course Objectives:
- Understand how workplace relations legislation works including its jurisdictional application to incorporated businesses.
- Learn where to access the legislation and associated laws/standards/orders and decisions;
- When you have it - learn what to do with it!!
Description:
In this module we will resource you with knowledge about how the system of industrial relations works in Australia. During the course participants will be directed to the relevant government agencies and sites to access the legislation on line, and to learn about how best to use the wide range of resources and information services available.
Participants will undertake activities, questions and a mini test, to test their learning thus far.
Module 2: Award application
Course Objectives:
- Understand the fundamental objectives of Awards
- Learn the fundamental objectives of Awards and their reverse effect on the legislation
- Learn how Awards impact terms and conditions of employment at the workplace level
- Learn how to navigate Awards
- Learn how to reconcile the requirements of relevant Awards and the making of Workplace Agreements

Whilst the number of Awards and their complexity is currently in a process of change and reconfiguration, what remains unchanged is that Employers bound by Awards must comply with their requirements.
Further, many Employers do not access their entitlements and benefits which arise from the proper application of Awards.
This important module will guide Employers to understand their Award obligations as well as how to identify opportunities and entitlements within.
Module 3: National Employment Standards (NES)
Course Objectives:
- Learn about each individual standard
- Learn how the NES interact with Modern Awards
- Learn how the NES interact with workplace agreements, contracts of employment and other industrial instruments
- Learn how to build these important requirements into your internal workplace relations processes
Description:
The Fair Work Act 2009 introduces 10 National Employment Standards. There are both obvious and discreet differences between the NES and the existing Australian Fair Pay & Conditions Standard, currently contained in the Workplace Relations Act 1996.
Compliance with the legislation requires employers to know and understand how to find, interpret and apply these Standards.
This important third module in our SME Industrial Training Suite will provide the necessary link between the legislation and application of its terms and conditions at the workplace.
Module 4: IR/HR Systems
Course Objectives:
- Learn about IR/HR integrated systems
- Learn how to develop and implement your own IR/HR integrated system; or
- Learn how to use available software solutions
- Learn how to manage and maintain an IR/HR integrated system

- Learn how to manage documentation and evidence surrounding termination of employment

Employers gain important workforce support and respect when the process of termination of employment is handled properly. Very few employers are comfortable with handling or resulting environment following a dismissal, or multiple dismissals.
Particularly with SME owners, dismissal is a very emotional, upsetting and concerning process.
